WAIS HIVE Extension & Lighting Replacement
NJP Electrical Services delivered a staged lighting and emergency lighting upgrade for VenuesWest at the WA Institute of Sport High Performance Service Centre.
Working within a live, high-performance sporting facility, the project was carefully planned and delivered to minimise disruption to athletes, coaches, staff and day-to-day operations.

VenuesWest engaged NJP Electrical Services to replace end-of-life lighting infrastructure and upgrade emergency lighting throughout the WA Institute of Sport High Performance Service Centre.
The works extended across the basketball court, running track and multi-use area, gym, Level 1 reception and offices, as well as emergency lighting throughout the facility.
With WAIS remaining fully operational throughout the project, the works required careful staging, specialised access solutions and close coordination with VenuesWest to maintain safe access and minimise disruption.
What We Delivered
Lighting Replacement
Replacement of end-of-life lighting infrastructure across key sporting, training and office areas within the facility.
Emergency Lighting Upgrade
Upgrade and integration of emergency lighting into the new Clevertronics HIVE emergency lighting system.
C-Bus Integration
Programming and validation of the existing C-Bus lighting control system to integrate the upgraded lighting infrastructure.
Testing & Commissioning
Functional testing of new fittings, emergency lighting compliance testing, lux-level verification and defect rectification, followed by as-constructed drawings and O&M documentation at handover.
Staged, Zone-Based Delivery
With the facility remaining in near-continuous use, NJP delivered the project using a staged, zone-based methodology aligned with WAIS operations.
Each area required a tailored access and protection strategy:
Running Track
A Spider Lift was driven along the centreline, providing access to lighting on both sides while minimising contact with the specialised track surface.
Basketball Court
AURA-compliant surface protection was installed, incorporating a 200-micron protective layer and 12mm plywood for load distribution. A lightweight one-man lift was then used to complete the works without direct wheel contact with the court.
Gym
Works were scheduled for weekends using a minimal-footprint one-man lift, with gym equipment protected throughout.
Offices & Stairs
Platform ladders and purpose-built scaffold systems allowed works to be completed without the need for heavy plant.
Pre-construction planning, site verification and daily coordination with VenuesWest helped keep the wider facility operational throughout each stage of the project.
Safety at Every Stage
Working at height within an operational sporting facility required careful management of access, electrical isolation and the protection of both people and specialised surfaces.
NJP implemented SWMS and JSAs for high-risk activities, supported by daily pre-starts and toolbox meetings. Controls were established for working at heights, EWP use, electrical isolation and manual handling, with all personnel inducted through the VenuesWest Rapid Global system.
Electrical testing was completed in accordance with AS 3017 and applicable Electricity Regulations.
Recycling & Material Recovery
The WAIS lighting and emergency lighting upgrade involved the removal of a significant volume of end-of-life electrical equipment, including light fittings, cable, aluminium components, control gear and emergency lighting battery components.
Throughout the works, NJP separated recoverable materials at the source into dedicated recycling streams rather than disposing of removed equipment as mixed general waste. Copper and cable, aluminium, extrusions, mixed metal and battery components were separated, alongside cardboard generated throughout the project. Materials were then weighed and documented by material type and quantity, creating a clear and traceable material recovery record for project close-out.

By project completion, 1,187.4 kg of material had been recycled, comprising 1,101 kg of metal and 86.4 kg of cardboard. The final results were verified through recycling dockets and recorded project cardboard weights.
This was particularly important for the emergency lighting component of the project, where the upgrade and extension of the Clevertronics HIVE system required existing emergency lighting equipment and battery components to be removed and appropriately managed.
The initiative also became an opportunity to involve NJP’s apprentices and younger team members in material separation and responsible waste practices. Their participation helped reinforce environmental awareness and better material-management habits as part of everyday project delivery.
This approach reflects NJP’s broader commitment to practical, measurable material recovery: separating what can be recovered, documenting the outcomes and providing clients with evidence of waste diversion as part of responsible project close-out.

Delivered Safely, With Minimal Disruption
The WAIS HIVE Extension & Lighting Replacement was delivered on programme with minimal disruption to WAIS operations, athletes and staff.
The project achieved zero recordable safety incidents and zero sports-surface damage events, while successfully delivering upgraded lighting, emergency lighting and control infrastructure across the operational high-performance facility.
